Acer Aspire 4720
Mark: Bad It is an Intel
core duo processor, with 2 GiB of memory, 250 GiB HDD, DVD writer,
Broadcom gigabit NIC, Intel 3945abg wireless NIC, 1280x800 screen,
and Windows Vista.
I used the Vista tools to shrink the existing partitions, then installed
eCS 2.0 RC4 (with very much difficulty). Eventually, I was able to get
enough of it to work, that it can be useful. The main item that does
not work (yet), is the wireless NIC. I had to abandon the ACPI support,
to get the Broadcom NIC to work, and I am able to get it into 2 processor
mode, using OS2APIC.PSD. More work to be done, but I think it will work,
eventually.

I have not been able to get either of the NICs, in my Acer Aspire 4720 laptop, to work with ACPI. Other things seem to be fine, although sound is pretty flaky. The Wired (unsupported by GENMAC, broadcom) NIC
works, using GENMAC, without ACPI. I can make it run in two processor mode, using the older OS2APIC.PSD (which you should find was installed, but not configured). The wireless NIC (Intel 3945 a/b/g) won't work. I believe that is a GENMAC problem. Of course, without
ACPI, there is no power control, of any kind (even with APM
installed).
| Doug Bissett 2008-08-05 07:39:00 | I have tried eCS 2.0 RC5, and updated that to ACPI 3.10. No change in operation. | Doug Bissett 2008-11-17 09:19:00 | ACPI 3.11 also fails to make the NICs work. So far, only the wired Broadcom NIC works, without ACPI loaded. | Doug Bissett 2008-12-01 21:31:34 | I should have noted, that eCS 2.0 RC5 does install properly. Using ACPI, updated to v3.13, still will not allow either NIC to work. The Broadcom NIC, and SMP, works well, without ACPI. | Doug Bissett 2009-02-19 06:26:56 | ECS 2.0 RC6a installs fine, but the NICs still won't work with ACPI (now 3.14). The wireless NIC (Intel 3945 a/b/g) still doesn't work, at all, but GENMAC does run the wired, Broadcom, NIC. This would, probably, be a good system, IF the NICs would work. Sound seems to be working pretty good, with UniAud 1.9.11, from Paul Smedley, but I am still suspicious that it hangs the system occasionally. | Doug Bissett 2009-06-27 00:28:37 | I found another use for this system, so it is no longer running eCS. Too bad, it should work, but doesn't. |
