Ogg Vorbis is an audio compression format similar to MP3 but free of patented algorithms and fully open source. While still in beta it is of a usable quality but not highly optimised so CPU usage is a bit higher than that of typical MP3 encoders & decoders. On my K6-2/450 using PM123 (analyzer turned off), playback uses 18% CPU (MP3 uses 16%). Encoding time using oggenc is around equal to play time.
