Microsoft continues his battle with OS/2. Here is a collection of messages related to ATMs battle.
- Operating System Choices for ATMs
According to this Microsoft propaganda, IBM will stop supporting OS/2 at the end of this year. Of course, "support" is a very vague term - on the one hand, they have already ended "support" for OS/2, and on the other hand, they have promised to deliver device driver "support" for a few more years. A recent disclosure by Diebold that its automated teller machines operated
by two financial services customers were struck by the W32/Nachi worm has
heightened concern of even wider disruptions from virus and worm outbreaks,
and highlights a growing security concern about vulnerability of cash
machines running Windows XP and interacting with other Windows systems....

Automatic teller machines at two banks running Microsoft Windows software were infected by a computer virus in August, reports MSNBC news here.
That's alarming, but not so much because the ATMs were infected. Rather, it's frightening because banks are apparently using an ordinary, commercial Microsoft O/S which is itself plagued by virus-slash-security problems and needs constant fixes and patches....

Don "Freiheit" Eitner published his personal viewpoint on "The 13th Floor" web-site.
The idea was spurred by recent discussions about eComStation and virtual machines as well as discussions about things that MacOS X can do that some users feel should be done in eComStation.
Since it is entirely a personal viewpoint, however, any feedback (flames, praise, counter-arguments) can be sent to the author directly.

Users of other operating systems frequently publish overviews of their favorite operating system and its software. They defend own investments and attract new users and developers which, in one`s turn, generate new ideas and create new software.

osFree project is about building a OpenSource OS/2 clone.
October 1, 2003 After long delay osFree project was restarted. We are presenting new updated webpages, new CVS (with updated sources) and forums.
osFree is a opensource free (non comercial) software development project. Goals of the projects are replace all (or most) of OS/2 sybsystems by its opensource analogues. As base system for compatability selected IBM OS/2 Warp 4 (Merlin). But it doesn't mean about not supporting features of newer versions of OS/2 like OS/2 WarpServer for e-bussines and successor of OS/2 - eComStation by Serenity Systems Int.
osFree is young project. Lot of things still to do, so any help welcomed. And not only code development, but also documentation writing, web pages maintaining, distribution maintainig, and many other.

Serenity Systems has reached an agreement with InnoTek Systemberatung to include the InnoTek Web Pack for OS/2 in the eComStation Entry 1.1 Product.
The Web Pack for OS/2 includes:
- The InnoTek OS/2 Kit for Java
- The InnoTek Font Engine
- The Macromedia Flash Player for OS/2
- The InnoTek OS/2 Kit for Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.05
For more information about the InnoTek Web Pack for OS/2, see this page.
There will be no change in the eComStation Entry 1.1 pricing to accomodate this change.
Presently, some of the components of the Web Pack for OS/2 are freely available directly from InnoTek, but restricted for personal use only. This license restriction does not effect the eComStation distribution.
Not having this restriction means that eComStation is the only authorized option for commercial use of this product for installations with fewer than 100 seats. For installations of 100 or more seats, in addition to the eComStation branding, the package is also available directly from InnoTek, as described in the referenced url.

The queue of eComStation/Rus 1.1 orders was processed.
Before eCS/Rus 1.1 installation remember 5 simple rules:
- Before: If drive letters R, S and Z are occupied then read Boot_3 paragraph from FAQ.TXT (CD2)
- Before: If you are going install different OSes on hard disk then install IBM Boot manager.
- During: Import registration key from file. Don't input it manually!
- After: LIBPATH=.;C:\OS2\DLL;.. should contain ".;" in the beginning;
- After: To install software from CD2 run ELI-INSTALL.CMD (not eCSGuide)
- All other questions are described in FAQ.TXT on CD2

On July 22, IBM updated the Java 1.3.1 Development Kit (javaintk) and the Run Time (javainrt).
The SciTech SNAP SE 2.1.5 was updated to include support for ATI Radeon 9000 Pro and the NVidia GeForce4 MX440 8X.
The OS/2 Gigabit Ethernet Fiber Adapter Driver now provides support for select Intel PRO/1000 Fiber Ethernet controllers (82542 / 82543GC / 82544EI).
Moreover, in the beginning of july the IBM High Rate Wireless Driver was released. The High Rate Wireless LAN Mini-PCI device driver provides OS/2 support for the 802.11b standard for wireless LAN (WLAN). This driver supports the Intersil Prism 2.5 chipset. (This driver appears to be a newer version of the driver for the IBM High Rate wireless PCMCIA card, though the description states its for the Mini-PCI wireless card in the T30).
On July 2, 2003, IBM released an updated USB Basic Device Support Package. This provides the basic OS/2 support required for USB devices that meets the USB 1.0 OHCI, USB 1.1 UHCI, or USB 2.0 EHCI specifications.

Additional overview of eComStation/Rus 1.1 was published (russian language).
The results of immediate OS development cycle show us the directions of product improvement: new drivers for peripheral devices and file systems are under construction; user interface was updated, hardware manufacturers license their drivers to eCS; network support was modernized; basic development tools and model applications was collected.
A sequence of installers is used to deploy eCS to user's computer.
eComStation survives thanks to three auxiliary forces:
- constant support of IBM corporation (weekly updates of basic OS),
- active participation of commercial companies,
- selfless work of individual developers.

eCo Software is proud to announce the release of russian eComStation/Rus 1.1 (14.089_W4). eCS/Rus 1.1 is distributed by license of Serenity Systems and it is based on original eComStation created by Serenity Systems and partner companies. The delivery of eCS/Rus should start in the end of this week.
